Google introduces Call from Gmail, free calls to US and Canada

Rumors have been buzzing about since June, but Google just made it official -- the company's baking Google Voice calls right into Gmail today. Like the Google Chat text, voice and video chat integrated into the web-based email client in prior years, full phone calls will also be an option using VoIP technology from the Gizmo5 aquisition. Google's demoing the "Call from Gmail" service for us in San Francisco this morning, and it's looking like it's not free, but fairly cheap - a product manager just called Paris for $0.02 a minute. Incoming calls pop up as a chat window in Gmail (and ring your Google Voice-equipped or tap them manually.

How to build the perfect Android tablet, part 1

Ed Burnette says, With a slew of Android tablets expected to hit the market over the next several months, I thought I’d take some time to think about what features and qualities I’d like to see them have. If any tablet manufacturers are reading this, I hereby grant you permission to use any or all of these ideas for free in your tablet, as long as you give me one (just kidding on that last part). As an added benefit, many of these qualities will be the same even if your tablet runs some other operating system such as iOS, Blackberry, Windows, and Chrome OS.

Before I get started, I realize not all of you are going to agree with my list, or order them in the same way. So feel free to use the Talkback area below to share your ideas about your *own* perfect tablet. More From ZDnet

SiliconIndia - Flash memory prices to slash by year end

To resurrect the dying market of SSDs, flash memory prices could drop to a dollar a gigabyte by the year end. However, iSuppli states that even this measure is not enough to kindle resurgence in SSDs. At the start of the year, the prices were just over $2 for 1GB of standard NAND flash memory. This has reduced as much to reach $1.20 for a dense three-bit-per-cell chip by the fall and may get to just $1 by the end of 2010.

Although it is anticipated that the reduction in prices clubbed with enough stock may boost the interest for SSDs, analysts at iSuppli think otherwise. They reason that hard drives have grown rapidly since 2008 and are low cost enough that the gap may be too wide for SSDs to recover. This observation roots from the fact that now internal drives normally top out at 2TB where SSDs approaching 1TB cost over $1,000 and often need large enclosures.

With McAfee deal, Intel to bake in security

In the future, you may not have to buy antivirus software for your laptops and mobile devices if Intel is able to live up to the promise of integrating technology from acquisition target McAfee, experts said on Thursday. In announcing its plans to acquire security company McAfee for $7.68 billion, Intel executives said they see security as being as critical to computing as performance and connectivity and that they plan to combine security with its hardware and expand further into the mobile market.

While Intel has been pushing more and more functionality down into the chips, a marriage with McAfee will mark a shift away from the security firm's traditional product strategy. More From CNet

The clock is ticking for iPad competitors

Some of the world's biggest electronics companies are readying an assault on the tablet market. But before they even begin, they find themselves at an early disadvantage. Though Samsung, LG Electronics, Acer, Hewlett-Packard, Asus, Research In Motion, and Dell have announced or hinted at touchscreen tablets that will arrive between now and March 2011, they're way late to the party. Since the iPad's debut in April, Apple has built a huge lead in this category--in terms of actual devices sold but also in many consumers' minds.

At first glance, the chances of the Galaxy Tablet from Samsung or a WebOS-based slate from HP wresting some reasonable share of this market from Apple in the short term don't seem great. The companies with the most resources and brand recognition in position to compete with Apple are either only just getting their products into stores (see the Dell Streak) or about to put them into production.
